In our editions we analyse the crisis engulfing France’s president, Emmanuel Macron. His election in May 2017 seemed to herald new optimism about France, Europe and the world. In office he has reformed labour markets, training and education. Yet along the way, Mr Macron forgot that democracy requires the constant forging of consent. This week, as yellow-jacketed protesters rioted in Paris and blocked fuel depots and roads in the countryside, France looked unreformable. It is depressingly easy to conclude that have-your-cake-and-eat-it populism will always triumph over reform, but all is not lost for Mr Macron. The right policies, the right politics and, above all, a dose of humility could yet save his presidency.
