  每一種語言皆有其非正式的通俗用法,英語自然也不例外。無論是從文化或語言的層面,為了能與外籍人士真正的交流溝通,英語學習者應超越課堂上正統英語形式的限制,放眼無垠的俚語和慣用語世界。

  英語人士在日常對話、社交場合中都會使用大量的俚語,因而以英語為第二外語的學習者至少要對這些俚語有些概念,知道這些俚語的基本發音。以英語人士的立場來看,若那些英語學習者願意下點功夫學習,以更口語的方式與他們對話,而不光是使用課堂上所學的那些硬繃繃的英語,他們往往會覺得很感激。

  俚語是文字的不標準用法,它可能是個新創造的字彙,也可能是從其他語言轉化而來的。它是一種是隨性或幽默的文字,流行的時間不是很長,使用起來會表現出幽默感、不那麼禮貌,或達到引人注目的效果。

  俚語往往只在短期流行,個別用語更是很難通過時間的考驗。一個通俗用語會隨另一個用語的興起而退流行。俚語通常是從某個次級團體的專門用語中出現,例如某個種族、職業、以及其他的次文化團體,像是會嗑藥的人、衝浪、滑板和滑雪板的愛好者、音樂家和大學生等等。

  在個人所屬的小團體中,用俚語來表達情緒與意見是最簡單的方式,而從各人使用的俚語中,也能區分出他們所屬的社會階級、種族性別。此外俚語也常用來討論一些比較禁忌,像是嗜酒、性器官、性行為和嗑藥等話題。

  每一種文化皆有自己的俚語,由一些慣用語和片語所構成,本書出版的目的,即為讀者導覽一些英語中最常見常用的俚語。讀者可以把它當作一本教科書,一頁一頁往下讀,也可以把它當作一本參考用的辭典,遇到陌生的用語時拿起來翻閱查詢。
