本書的主體（概述部分）正是按照上述四個領域而編排，共分為五章︰第一章是導言，總體介紹研究領域和研究方法；第二章描述從第一聲啼哭到孩童式創造性地使用語言的整個語言習得過程，揭示了語言的內在性；第三章描述語言產生需經歷的四個階段；概念形成、言語組合、發聲和自控；第四章論述諸如口誤等語言現象為我們理解語言產生提供的依據。然而這個復雜的過程基本上是不意識的。

借助實驗的方法，人們對語音、詞匯、句子以及篇章理解都作了較為客觀的研究，並得出結論，即語言的理解明顯受到語境因素的影響；第五章介紹通過對失語癥病人的觀察研究，人們不僅掌握了大腦某些區域與語言關系，還發現兒童大腦損傷的部位一不同對語言能力所產生的影響也大不相同。
