一書通過分析京劇「白蛇傳」的故事原型及故事中主要人物，剖析了中國文化中「蛇」與女性相聯系的一些因素，並研究了京劇和一些地方劇種對「白蛇傳」的演繹及舞台燈光效果等因素對演出的影響。因此，是一部通過「白蛇傳」這個民間故事傳說了解中國戲曲文化的重要讀本。

楊孝明教授，1977年畢業於西安外國語大學，獲學士學位，留校認教。1984年赴英國學習，並於1985年和1991年先后獲得英語諾丁漢大學語言學碩士和美國俄亥俄州鮑陵格林州立大學英語博士學位，現為美國新澤西海洋學院終身教授，美國”現代語言協會”和”全美英語教師聯合會”永久會員。
