The Plot Against America

　　When the renowned aviation hero and rabid isolationist Charles A. Lindbergh defeated Franklin Roosevelt by a landslide in the 1940 presidential election, fear invaded every Jewish household in America. Not only had Lindbergh, in a nationwide radio address, publicly blamed the Jews for selfishly pushing America toward a pointless war with Nazi Germany, but upon taking office as the thirty-third president of the United States, he negotiated a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler, whose conquest of Europe and virulent anti-Semitic policies he appeared to accept without difficulty. What then followed in America is the historical setting for this startling new book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Philip Roth, who recounts what it was like for his Newark family - and for a million such families all over the country - during the menacing years of the Lindbergh presidency, when American citizens who happened to be Jews had every reason to expect the worst.

菲利普．羅斯（Philip Roth）

　　1933年生於紐澤西州紐華克市一個中產階級猶太人家庭，1954年畢業於賓夕法尼亞州巴克內爾大學，隔年獲芝加哥大學文學碩士學位並留校教學，同時攻讀博士學位，後放棄研究而專事寫作。1959年以小說《再見，哥倫布》一舉成名（該書獲美國國家書卷獎）。

　 　1960年任教於愛荷華大學作家班，兩年後成為普林斯頓大學駐校作家，並曾在賓州大學指導過多年比較文學課程，1992年退休後仍筆耕不輟至今。羅斯的 作品廣受讀者和批評家青睞，並獲獎無數，包括普立茲文學獎、福克納文學獎、美國國家書評家協會獎、國家書卷獎，法國梅第西外國小說獎、古根海姆獎、歐亨利 小說獎和美國文學藝術獎，他本人也在1970年被選為美國文學藝術院院士。

　 　In 1997 Philip Roth won the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral. In 1998 he received the National Medal of Arts at the White House, and in 2002 the highest award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Gold Medal in Fiction, previously awarded to John Dos Passos, William Faulkner and Saul Bellow, among others. He has twice won the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He has won the PEN/Faulkner Award three times. In 2005 The Plot Against America received the Society of American Historians’ Prize for ‘the outstanding historical novel on an American theme for 2003–2004’.

　　Recently Roth received PEN’s two most prestigious prizes: in 2006 the PEN/Nabokov Award ‘for a body of work . . . of enduring originality and consummate craftsmanship’ and in 2007 the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction, given to a writer whose ‘scale of achievement over a sustained career . . . places him or her in the highest rank of American literature’. In 2011 Roth won the International Man Booker Prize.

　 　Roth is the only living American writer to have his work published in a comprehensive, definitive edition by the Library of America.
