Haas (political science, U. of Massachusetts, Amherst) has selected readings on analytic approaches to the international political economy of the environment (found in v.1) and applications
(v.2). While the majority of the works were published in the 1990s, many classics are included, such as H. Scott Gordon’s "The Economic Theory of a Common-property Resource; The Fishery"
(1954), Garrett Hardin’s "The Tragedy of the Commons" (1968), Johan Galtung’s "The Limits to Growth" (1972), Ronald H. Coase’s "The Problem of Social Cost" (1960), and W.I. Vernadsky’s
"Problems of Biogeochemistry" (1944). Volume 1 is divided into eight main topics: definitions, the tragedy of the commons, power and leadership, international institutions, radical political
economy, domestic politics, NGOs and civil society, and ecological ideas (which is the longest section, with nine selections). The five parts of volume two are social choice/political economy;
sustainable development doctrines; free trade and the environment; environmental and ecological security; and compliance, implementation and effectiveness. Haas provides an introduction that
summarizes the selected readings and their relevance (with a list of references). A name index is included, but there is no subject index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
