內容簡介

Written to honor William Anderson, professor emeritus of classics and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley, these essays were all authored by Anderson’s former graduate students. They center on genre and gender in Latin literature and are thematically linked in their concern with the change, transgression, instability and permeability of boundaries. Several of the essays reflect Anderson’s interest in the influence of Greek tradition on Roman comedies. Other subjects include Horace’s lyric response to Catullan language, Martial’s gift poems, and a comparison of Orpheus in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Ted Hughes in his own Birthday Letters .
