Even today the very idea of a cooperative school for student teachers is shocking, so educators can imagine how the Bank Street College of Education was first received in the 1930s. Grinberg (educational foundations, Montclair State University) uses oral histories and a number of telling documents to explain how this program, begun and studied largely by women, used the concepts and teaching of Lucy Sprague Mitchell to develop a truly progressive method of teacher education. Grinberg describes how the school met a need, who taught and who attended, how learning was structured and when it was not, the connection of theory and practice, institutional organization practices, and the impact of the school on modern teacher education.
