　　Rousseau's last great work, Reveries of the Solitary Walker is part reminiscence, part meditation, as the philosopher tries to come to terms with his isolation and to find happiness in solitude and nature. The Reveries are an important complement to Rousseau's other philosophical and autobiographical works and address many of the same issues, making it a useful introduction for anyone interested in reading Rousseau for the first time. Russell Goulbourne offers a fresh new translation that marries accuracy with readability. 盧梭　Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1712-1778

　　法國著名思想家、哲學家、教育家、文學家，是十八世紀法國大革命的思想先驅、啟蒙運動重要代表人物，十九世紀浪漫主義文學的先驅。

　 　盧梭生於日內瓦一個新教徒家庭，祖輩是法國人。在他出世後沒有幾天，母親便去世，他隨其做鐘錶匠的父親生活，由其姑母撫養。十歲時，其父因打傷一貴族逃亡他鄉。十六歲起，他便離開了日內瓦，漂泊瑞士和法國各地，當過僕人、學徒、家庭教師。由於天資聰穎，特別是經過長期勤奮自學和個人奮鬥，而獲得了廣博的知識，成了音樂教師，抄譜作曲，並在該方面小有名氣，受到歡迎。1741年，他來到巴黎，結識了啟蒙主義者、百科全書派的狄德羅、孔迪亞克、達朗貝爾等人，替《百科全書》撰稿。此後先後寫出《論科學與藝術》、《論人類不平等的起源和基礎》，前者使他聲名鵲起。盧梭的作品影響領域廣泛，著有《新愛洛伊斯》、《愛彌兒》、《懺悔錄》、《社會契約論》。

　　Jean-Jacques Rousseau (28 June 1712 – 2 July 1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of 18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought. His novel Emile: or, On Education is a treatise on the education of the whole person for citizenship. His sentimental novel Julie, ou la nouvelle Heloise was of importance to the development of pre-romanticism and romanticism in fiction. Rousseau's autobiographical writings — his Confessions, which initiated the modern autobiography, and his Reveries of a Solitary Walker — exemplified the late 18th-century movement known as the Age of Sensibility, featuring an increasing focus on subjectivity and introspection that has characterized the modern age.
