Fleeing the Irish potato famine to build a new life for herself in New York City, Bridget Heaney supports herself and her younger sister as a pickpocket, until she takes a dream job as a cook for the wealthy, powerful Isaac Gold, a department store magnate, but her first day ends in tragedy when she stumbles upon the body of her employer's youngest son.
