Rothko 2007 Calendar

　　Mark Rothko's enormous, enigmatic paintings evince a powerful feeling of communion with spirit. (In fact, a pair of collectors founded the Rothko Chapel in 1971, a year after the artist died, as a free space of meditation.) Rothko was reluctant and self-contradictory in discussing his intentions; still, he said of the paintings that "Every shape becomes an organic entity, inviting the multiplicity of associations inherent in all living things." His stacks of soft-edged rectangles float before us, their colors suggesting an infinite number of associations.
