Prout looks at the ways fear (of effeminacy and of childishness) has worked as an organizing principle in the prose of Spanish novelist and journalist Juan Goytisolo. Prout looks both at the author’s best-known works and at less familiar ones, including juvenilia, concluding that ＂if Goytisolo is a great writer, he is also a great child, a great sissy, in short, and above all, a great person.＂ His final chapter addresses the integration and reappraisal of themes central to Goytisolo’s persona as he wrote about living through the siege of Sarajevo.
