Kit O'Malley is back - tougher, smarter, and more dangerous than ever. And this time it's not just her smart mouth that gets Kit into trouble.
In her favorite bar, owned by her friend Angie, a bloodless corpse is found. Kit is on the scene and determined to do what she can. But Detective-Sergeant Graham Parker is in charge, which does nothing to reassure Kit that the real killer will be found. Then the corpse is identified as a member of a notorious crime family - and a bad situation has just got a whole lot worse. It seems like the city is heading for a violent gang war. Kit must pick her way through the Melbourne underworld, dealing with characters like Doghouse Dixon and Will Thumpya, and ending up in the kitchen of crime matriarch Queenie Riley.
Sure, the PI with the mean right hook knows how to look after herself, but asking the right questions of the wrong people soon drags Kit's friends into danger. As her personal life and work life get ever more entangled, Kit struggles with events that are fast moving beyond her control.
