內容簡介

Perhaps the novelists crowded them out, or twentieth-century modernist critics thought Whitman, Dickinson and perhaps Poe would suffice as representative poets. However, in over 20 articles, the contributors here correct the error of their forbears by giving instructors of undergraduates more ammunition. Although Longfellow and Sigourney, who were not entirely ignored in the last century, find their places here, some of the most interesting entries include work previously ignored because the author was American Indian, African American, female, or the work was working class or erotic. Contributors give contexts for such authors as Margaret Fuller and Frances E.W. Harper, Stephen Crane and Charlotte Perkins, and give comprehensive strategies for teaching about women poets, narrative pairings, and sentimentalism. The editors supply a very useful set of teaching resources. Annotation 穢2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
