Towne (an assistant university archivist at Indian U.-Purdue U. Indianapolis) presents 90 letters documenting the American Civil War as experienced by Col. Edward Jesup Wood, who fought in the
Western Theater on the Union side with the 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The letters consist Wood's half of the correspondence between him and his wife and demonstrate how his
military and political perspectives developed over the course of the war. A biographical essay is included to provide context and further contextual information concerning the major campaigns
