Amply illustrated with color photographs, this oversize volume (9x12") explores bast and fiber leaf weaving traditions from around the world. The writers discuss the materials and dyeing and weaving techniques, as well as uses of the fabrics created, from everyday clothing to religious and other ceremonial uses. Issues in contemporary weaving and concerns regarding preserving these colorful traditions also are discussed. The volume was edited by Milgram (anthropology, Ontario College of Art and Design) and Hamilton, curator of Asian and Pacific Collections at UCLA’s Fowler Museum.
