Keith (communication, Boston College) compiles 19 essays that look at how radio has affected the social and cultural environment of the US since its origins. The essays focus on the
relationship of minority or fringe-groups with radio at different points in its development and history. Essays cover such topics as the regulatory failure of minority ownership of facilities,
how radio brought women into the public sphere, the rise of gay and lesbian radio, labor unions, indecency and programming, and types such as: linguistic minority, Native American, the
underground scene, Christian, public, hate, and talk radio. Others address the unlicensed movement, the medium’s use to inspire young readers, and related cultural studies. Annotation ©2008
