每個日本人都知道何謂wabi-sabi，但若要解釋，他們可能會猶豫很久，最後抱歉地說：「大概只有日本人才能體會。」這個神秘、日本人才懂的概念，正是日本千年美學基礎。無論京都的寺廟、庭院、屋瓦，還是東京的建築、茶碗、服飾，到處都是這個概念的展現。特別是在茶屋裡，每個動作與每樣器物，幾乎都是為了體會wabi-sabi而存在。
