內容簡介

The 2010 issue of Acta Hyperborea concentrates on the work of Danish artist Johannes Wiedewelt (1731-1802). Editor Nielson introduces the edition with a brief biography of Wiedewelt. She explains why his contribution to the development of Neo-Classicism has largely been neglected; many of his works were destroyed by fire and war by 1813. Also, at the time of his death, his work was out of fashion. The breadth of this work is demonstrated in the following essays. They look at his memorial sculptures, paintings, satirical sketches, furniture design and landscape design. The influence of the classical art he saw during his stay in Rome is studied as well as his incorporation of the mythology of the ancient world. The Masonic influences in his work are also noted. With many color plates, this is an excellent introduction to an artist little remembered, even in his own country. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
