內容簡介

With co-editors: CAROLYN COLLETTE, MARYANNE KOWALESKI, LINNE MOONEY, AD PUTTER, and DAVID TROTTER England was more widely and enduringly francophone in the middle ages than standard accounts allow. The continuing permutations of Anglo-Norman and Anglo-French were deeply interwoven both with medieval English and the spectrum of Frenches used both within and outside the realm; some thousand or so literary texts were composed in French in England during the period, and French is the language of much administration and many professions and occupations. This has major implications for the literature and culture of the period, which have hitherto not been sufficiently explored. The essays in this volume form a new cultural history focussed round, but not confined to, the presence and interactions of francophone speakers, writers, readers, texts and documents in England from the eleventh to the later fifteenth century. As a whole they restore a multi-vocal multi-cultural medieval England in all its complexity, and open up fresh agendas for its major linguistic, literary and documentary cultures.
