Musicologists Epp and Power have compiled this collection of essays on medieval and Renaissance music and performance in honor of University of Toronto professor emeritus Timothy J. McGee. The
work is divided into two parts, studies of evidence of performance in early manuscripts and performance in a social context including dance as performance and participation. Many of the
articles find new information in previously studied texts. The final essay, on the recent reinterpretations of the music of twelfth century abbess and mystic, Hildegard of Bingen, exemplifies
the constant irresolvable debate about the nature of musical performance. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
