Favro (Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia) and Brebbia (Wessex Institute of Technology, UK) compile 24 papers presented at the First International Conference on Island
Sustainability, held on the island of Brac, Croatia, in April 2010. Papers revolve around the theme of promoting the sustainable development of islands in a way compatible with their natural
environment and cultural and historic traditions. They address projects, initiatives, and experiences related to island issues such as the impact of tourism, community issues and attitudes,
climate change, rising sea levels, infrastructure maintenance, disaster prevention, shore protection, and transport issues in Croatian and Caribbean islands, the Canary Islands, Cyprus, Samoa,
Cuba, islands of the United Arab Emirates, islands near Tokyo, and others, and to serve as guidelines for other initiatives in less developed islands. Contributors work in geography,
