In the second of two volumes (they're sold individually), Buser (art history, U. of Louisville) continues his presentation of the main artists and themes in 19th-century religious (Christian)
art in the US and Europe with five chapters devoted to major iconographical themes. The topics include religious landscape painting, Christ, and morality, with consideration of philosophical
trends current at the time. Among the artists discussed are Philipp Otto Runge, Thomas Cole, Hippolyte Flandrin, and William Blake. The volume displays a familiarity with a genre of paintings
that has been largely ignored by scholars because of its passionately religious content. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
