The Old Man and the Sea

　　人能夠忍受痛苦，可以被毀，但意志不能被打敗。「海面很大，船很小」。渺小的個體(老人)對抗外在環境，有歷盡滄桑的搏鬥過程。儘管勝利者所獲無多，或者說沒有誰是最後的勝利者，且充滿茫然的悲劇，故事卻在單調的情境、簡鍊的情節中延伸，蘊藏令人回味無窮的動人描述。這部精彩的中篇小說可以做為海明威作品和其硬漢一生的完美句點。

　　The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal—a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

作者簡介

海明威（Ernest Miller Hemingway , 1899~1961）

　　1954年諾貝爾文學獎得主，他對英文寫作的影響之深，可以說二十世紀沒有作家能超越他，被譽為美國偉大小說家。1899年7月21日出生於芝加哥市郊橡樹園鎮，父親是醫生，母親從事音樂教育，家中有六個兄弟姊妹，海明威排行第二。

　 　海明威從小酷愛體育、捕魚和狩獵，並曾與父親在北密西根州穿行印地安人部落行醫。中學畢業後曾去法國等地旅行，回國後當過見習記者。第一次大戰爆發後， 他志願赴義大利擔任當地救護車司機，這個經歷後來被他寫成《太陽依舊升起》。1918年夏天，在前線被砲彈炸成重傷，回國休養。1920年加入加拿大多倫 多星報工作團隊。

　　海明威文句簡單清楚，文體帶有剛強、簡潔的特質。1923年，開始在巴黎出版作品(處女作《故事三則詩十首》)。緊 接著出版了短篇小說集《我們的時代》。1926年海明威第一部長篇小說《太陽依舊升起》取得成功，《沒有女人的男人》翌年推出亦得到讚譽。之後他還陸續出 版了《戰地春夢》《非洲青山》，文壇聲望日隆，使他成為二十世紀文學的偉大之光。他在年輕時出入巴黎藝術文化圈，投入歐洲戰事，這些更是擴展了他的國際知 名度和影響力。

　　二戰前夕，西班牙內戰爆發，他曾三次以記者身分親赴前線，在炮火中完成了劇本《第五縱隊》，並創作了以美國人參加西班 牙反法西斯戰爭為題材的長篇小說《戰地鐘聲》。1941年，和夫人瑪莎前往遠東報導中日戰爭；戰後，客居古巴，潛心寫作。1952年，《老人與海》問世， 深受好評，翌年獲普立茲獎。1954年，獲諾貝爾文學獎。

　 　Ernest Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899, the second of six children. In 1917, he joined the Kansas City Star as a cub reporter. The following year, he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front, where he was badly wounded but decorated for his services. He returned to America in 1919, and married in 1921. In 1922, he reported on the Greco-Turkish war before resigning from journalism to devote himself to fiction. He settled in Paris, associating with other expatriates like Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. He was passionately involved with bullfighting, big-game hunting and deep-sea fishing. Recognition of his position in contemporary literature came in 1954 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961.
