　　彼得一心惦掛著他對媽媽臨終時的承諾：要好好照顧妹妹。可是收養他的老兵告訴他，他的妹妹一出生就死了。彼得一再想起幼年時爸爸陪他在花園裡嬉戲，大肚子的媽媽微笑看著的畫面，並不真切相信老兵的話，於是懷著姑且一試的心情，用一塊錢去換取算命師的一個答案。算命師告訴他，他的妹妹活著，一頭大象可領他到妹妹住的地方。

　　大象被展示在伯爵夫人的大舞池裡，供民眾參觀，彼得也去看了，眾人興奮談論的時刻，他卻看進了大象的眼裡，看到牠的焦慮與孤單，看到牠的思鄉，所以想法子懇求警察、伯爵夫人、腿傷的貴婦讓魔術師用法術倒退時間，將大象送回牠原本的地方，將貴婦的一雙好腿留住。在一干人和一頭大象浩浩蕩蕩去牢房的路上，經過了一所孤兒院，意外遇見了彼得失聯的妹妹。
大象最後回家了，貴婦的腿傷沒好轉，但她選擇原諒。

凱特．狄卡密歐（Kate DiCamillo）

　　出生於美國賓州，成長於溫暖的佛羅里達州，目前居住於冬季漫長的明尼蘇達州。第一本兒童小說《傻狗溫迪客》（Because of Winn-Dixie）獲2001年美國紐伯瑞兒童文學銀牌獎；隔年《高飛》（The Tiger Rising）獲美國國家圖書館青少年文學銀牌獎；《雙鼠記》（The Tale of Despereaux）獲2004年紐伯瑞兒童文學金牌獎；《愛德華的神奇旅行》獲2006年美國角書─環球報兒童文學獎。各本書在國內也屢獲、好書大家讀、深耕閱讀、新聞局優良讀物甄選活動推薦。
