  The artists at Weta Digital and Weta Workshop were thrilled to get the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg to bring Herge’s wonderful characters to the big screen in The Adventures of Tintin.

  They spent five years working on this movie. This book tells the story of how the filmmakers started with the original Herge artwork and books and ended up with what is seen on-screen. It features early concept drawings, previs sequences, models, costume designs and final stills from the film.

  The book focuses on the creative process, showing the many designs that made it into the movie and others that didn’t. It highlights the attention to detail, skill and creativity of all the artists involved in the making of the movie. The story is told by the artists themselves, who talk about their inspirations, techniques and experiences. Through them we gain a true insight into the creative thinking behind this groundbreaking feature film.

  Weta Digital is a world-leading visual effects company based in Wellington, New Zealand. The company began work in 1993 on co-founder Peter Jackson’s film Heavenly Creatures. Weta Digital established itself as an elite creator of cutting-edge visual effects, working digital magic on blockbusters such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

  Led by Senior Supervisor Joe Letteri, Weta Digital’s work on James Cameron’s Avatar involved using a new camera system and developing new technologies and workflows to maximize the benefits of shooting on a virtual stage.   The team at Weta enjoys engaging in projects holistically, from preliminary technical analysis and conceptual design through to finished results across all departments and the final delivery of product and crew to set, anywhere in the world. Drawing on more than 20 years of filmmaking experience, five-time winner of the Oscar for Design and Special Effects and company supervisor Richard Taylor is intimately involved in all stages of each project.

  Best known for the company’s design and effects work on award-winning film projects such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar and District 9, Weta Workshop is not limited to film and television but offers its services to creative industries worldwide.

  Film fanatic Chris Guise was working as a cartoon portrait artist in Wellington shopping malls when he got a job with special effects company Weta Workshop. For the next five years he worked on The Lord of the Rings trilogy in various areas, including the armor/weapons department, where he helped construct hundreds of suits of armor required for the films. He went on to sculpt several pieces for the Weta merchandising line, including a Muppets ‘Rowlf the Dog’ bust, which won the World’s Best Statue/Bust Global Award at Toy Fair 2003 in New York City.

  Chris has also been involved in the Weta Workshop design studio on a wide variety of other projects, including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the television show The WotWots. In 2006, Chris was hired as Weta Workshop’s Lead Conceptual Designer for the film The Adventures of Tintin.
