Edited by Maritan (management, Syracuse U.) and Peteraf (management, Dartmouth U.), this is the fifth publication in Edward Elgar's Strategic Management series and is devoted to providing an
overview of the current management studies literature on how firms compete in industries and markets and how they vie for competitive advantage. The anthology has been produced by selecting
top-cited papers from Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, Administrative Science Quarterly, and similar publications. Sixty-two articles published between 1984 and 2008 are
presented in two volumes and are organized around seven topical themes. The first volume focuses on competitive effects at different levels of business and includes thematic sections on
industry versus firm-level effects, competition in industries, competitive interaction, and competition at the group level. The second volume focuses more specifically on the individual firm
and its internal characteristics, containing thematic sections on resources and competitive advantage, resource acquisition and capability development, and dynamic capabilities. Annotation
