Wilkinson (Germanic studies, comparative literature, and women's and gender studies; U. of Texas-Austin) is engaged in a large project studying European women playwrights of the 19th and 20th
centuries, of whom Leffler (1849-92) was the most important. The Swedish playwright wrote 14 plays that were performed or published, she says, and along with August Strindberg (1849-1912) is
considered one of the Swedish founders of modern drama. She looks first at her modern breakthrough during the 1870s, then at politics and modernism in the plays of the 1880s and 1890s.
