that led to Erik the Red's banishment to Greenland, as well as Leif Ericson's discovery of Vinland, believed to be modern-day Newfoundland,�when his ship was blown off course. Thought to have
first been written in the 13th century,�this tale�suggests that Icelanders arrived in America in the year 1000, some five centuries before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
