Literary Intellectuals: East and West

Ten essays by Al-Dabbagh (English literature, United Arab Emirates U.) explore literary and cultural issues of British literary criticism, in seven of the essays, and Arab intellectuals and Arab literature, in the last three. Many of the essays focus on specific intellectual figures, including T.S. Eliot, George Orwell, Raymond Williams, E.P. Thompson, Perry Anderson, Christopher Caudwell, and John McGrath. Others address broader topics, including Islamophobia among British intellectuals, a political typology of the international intelligentsia, Mediterraneanism in modern Arab cultural thought, and the poetics of exile and identity in modern Iraqi poetry.
