Mikhelson wrote the first edition. Consulting engineer and prolific author Hicks has revised it by using the black left-hand (verso) pages for new related content. Thus the venerable reference
is updated and expanded without new pages or increased cost, and some space is still left for notes. The formulas are presented in sections covering the basis of structural analysis; statics;
soils and foundations; and retaining structures, pipes, and tunnels. Diagrams, drawings, charts, and graphs are used along with text to explain the formulas and their use. The emphasis on
