Tungate presents a history of the advertising industry around the globe. He regards advertising as a sociological given and takes a generous view of it, referring to it as "the accelerator at
the heart of the liberal economy." He compares advertising to prostitution as the other "oldest profession," but outside of the few pre- and early-modern historical glosses, this history is
focused on the last 100-200 years and especially the era of global capitalism. He focuses on European advertising, but features chapters on American contributions to the industry during the
pioneering days. He considers Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Australian, Chinese advertising giants; big ideas and international influence; and changes in the industry brought on by the
Internet. This second edition addresses in more detail the future of the industry. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
