內容簡介

Rosen presents this collection of essays on the role of class in academia. The first essay attempts to narrow some definition of class by asking whether it can be conceived of as an identity. Part two addresses the question of who is allowed into college, discussing undocumented students, low-income students, especially women on welfare, and the ideal of open admissions, followed in part three by how class affects teachers and the labor market for instruction. On-campus and within-classroom dynamics are discussed next, analyzing the culture clashes between students from poor and middle-class backgrounds, as well as the difficulty of making classed perspectives visible in largely homogeneous environments and the promise of upward mobility through education. The last two sections discuss class as an element of the curriculum, focusing on its integration with the humanities, film, literature, women’s studies, and interdisciplinary and intersectional courses.
