A coffee-table book for ballroom dance enthusiasts, this volume focuses on dramatic color photographs of nationally and internationally ranked ballroom dancers competing at events on the dance circuit (Dancesport championships, the Emerald Ball, various U.S. and British events with international competitors). However, the author is a visual anthropologist (his current studies center on ballroom dance; he is also a ballroom dance fan and amateur dancer). The text, while light enough to satisfy casual readers, looks seriously at the culture of ballroom dance and its competitive professionals. Captions note both technical points that determine how ballroom dance is judged, and the social and emotional values they show. As a result, the book will have a secondary audience of visual anthropologists and readers interested in visual culture or dance, athletic, or theatrical performance.
