Editor Elizabeth Hale has compiled a collection of essays examining various aspects of Maurice Gee’s work for young readers. Maurice Gee, New Zealand’s preeminent children’s author, has
published fantasy novels, realist novels, and historical fiction for young readers. Gee’s work has been called a cultural touchstone for New Zealand, and this collection looks at his themes,
his characters, the life he imbues his characters with, and his contexts. Also considered is the popular and critical reception of Gee’s work both within and outside of New Zealand. Elizabeth
Hale is a Senior Lecturer in English and Writing at the University of New England, Australia and has published extensively on children’s literature and nineteenth century literature.
