In her PhD dissertation at the University of Antwerp, Coenen assesses the role of trade in the economic development of the parts of the Netherlands that were under the control of Austria during
the 18th century. Her topics include the Austrian Netherlands in the second half of the 18th century, international trade by a commercially passive participant, the balance of trade, whether
