What does a sixtyish accountant do when he is forced into retirement and has no plans for the future? What does his busy academic wife do in order to save her important research project? She
encourages him to take off from California to Millport on his favourite Scottish island in search of an adventure. And that is what Calum Davies does. However, it seems like instead of
searching for an adventure, adventures search for him. Callum gets embroiled in the most unlikely things going on around a sleepy little holiday island and its smaller unoccupied sister island.
He takes on the persona of an amateur sleuth to investigate the allegation of nuclear waste going missing while a power station is being decommissioned and the apparently unrelated
disappearance of a Hollywood diva, whom he met on the trans-Atlantic flight. Things get complicated when an American research company that comes under suspicion at the power station proves to
be connected to Calum’s wife’s research funding. And, the husband of the missing diva turns out to be an American entrepreneur who has bought the largest football team in Scotland and is
already embroiled in the sectarianism that divides the sport. To make matters worse, he does not believe that Calum’s intentions are honourable as he sets out to thwart the lukewarm efforts of
the police in finding her. The police get increasingly frustrated with Calum’s meddling but it is only though his hunches and perseverance that investigations into the two cases make progress;
moreover, it emerges that there may be a direct connection between the two. In spite of his success, Calum encounters widespread resistance and a fierce beating but he is not put off, thanks
largely to the encouragement he gets from a distance from his wife as she gets deeper into her controversial research which throws up resistance from governments, intelligence agencies, and her
funders. Their mutual support permits each to achieve what they have set out to do which is just as well for Calum because he has also taken on responsibility for organizing the biggest golf
tournament and concert ever to take place in Millport. Its success will go a long way to undoing the negative publicity the area has received and Calum strives to restore the happy friendly
image of the holiday town and islands.
