Translator Margaret Kirby presents students, academics, and general interest readers with an English translation of Goethe’s Faust I that attempts to preserve the line structure of the original
while using unrhymed modern English to illuminate the distinctive voices, metrical range, tone, comic range, and tragic resonance of Goethe’s masterpiece. The main body of the text includes an
introduction and notes from the translator, as well as the entire translated text of the first part of Faust. Margaret Kirby is a faculty member of St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland.
