After reviewing the early history of firearms technology, the author explains how musket balls were made and fired, and offers advice on establishing the origin of an artifact, particularly those recovered from a Revolutionary War site. Numerous color photographs depict the characteristics of musket balls collected from historic battlefields, canister shot and containers, teeth marks left by swine and rodents, deformations caused by different impacts, and alternations that enhanced lethality.
