In recent years, smart specialisation has been a key building block of regional economic and development policy, both across the European Union as well as under the auspices of both the World Bank and OECD.
Providing targeted support for innovation and research, it has helped identify those areas of greatest strategic potential, developing mechanism to involve the fullest range of stakeholders, before setting strategic priorities and using the policy to maximize the knowledge-based potential of a region or territory.
This book contributes to the emerging debate about the role of ‘entrepreneurial discovery’ (ED), which is at the heart of smart specialisation strategies for regional economic transformation. This would be the first book that directly addresses the ED process, a key building block in the definition of research and innovation strategies and priorities and therefore essential to the successful design of a smart specialisation strategy.
