Gout is a type of joint disease that is linked to the buildup of uric acid crystals in the fluids and tissues inside the body. It can be caused by the kidneys not being able to excrete uric acid from the body or an overproduction of uric acid in the body. It is related to a poor diet, alcohol consumption, and the taking of certain medications, yet there are hereditary forms of the disease as well. There are about 3 million Americans who currently live with gout or gouty arthritis. When a person suffers from acute gout, it may have a particular joint that becomes hot, swollen and red. The joint pain Is usually unilateral, meaning it doesn’t affect the same joint on both sides of the body. Most people with acute gout suffer from excruciating pain in the affected joint that can be easily managed by taking some NSAID drugs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as ibuprofen (marketed as Motrin or Advil) or naproxen sodium (sold as Naprosyn or Aleve).
