內容簡介

Scholars from Morocco and the West investigate Tangier as a signifier in the literary imagination and why it has come to play such a central role in literary history, and address the city's recent history and contemporary reality. Their topics include cross-cultural encounters and literary production, celebrating Mohamed Choukri as a Moroccan writer, Juan Goytisolo's maps of Tangier, culture and existence in Paul Bowles' short fiction, the Tangier that was in the 1683 Confessions of Samuel Pepys. All but one of the 13 essays were originally delivered at a conference in the Moroccan city itself in the fall of 2004; two of them are in French.
