Driesen (communication and art, Edith Cowan U., Australia) explores the significance of the Aboriginal presence in three texts by Australian novelist Patrick White: Voss (1957), Riders in the
Chariot (1961), and A Fringe of Leaves. Applying the understanding of orientalism articulated by Edward Said in his work of the same name, Driesen argues that White's writings critically
interrogated European culture's denigration of the non-European Other. In essence, Patrick White's project was a rare white writer's attempt to "decolonize the mind" and subvert orientalist
stereotypes. Annotation 穢2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
