Gong Yoo: his name alone sets hearts aflutter.2 Charming, humble and extremely talented—there’s just no underestimating3 Asia’s love affair4 with this 37-year-old South Korean actor.

You guys are OK?

Coming off a string of hit films and dramas, Gong Yoo is riding the powerful K-wave—the global spread of Korean entertainment—to success. Last year, he headlined5 the blockbuster6 film Train to Busan, which premiered7 at the prestigious8 Cannes Film Festival in France. Then, there was his immensely9 popular TV series Goblin, which solidified10 his place as one of South Korea’s most versatile11 leading men.

Good to see you.
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
You’ve just finished the hit drama Goblin. Why was it such a success?
GONG YOO, ACTOR
I don’t know why. I don’t know.
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
You can just say it was your acting. But something clicked with the audience, didn’t it? All these women fell in love with your character.
GONG YOO, ACTOR
Yeah, a character. It’s not me.
GONG YOO, ACTOR (VIA INTERPRETER)
It’s a piece I was really worried about. I certainly never thought Asia and the world would love it so much. When I think about why this drama was so beloved12—at least in Korea … it is a story that goes beyond human-to-human relationships and love. There is this special godlike13 figure who has the ability to do a lot more than humans, interacting14 with humans who don’t have much compared to him, and the love between a human and someone who isn’t human. I think the public thought it was fresh. For example, it might be similar to the movie Twilight, where a vampire15 fell in love with a weak human girl.
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
You’re very versatile. You play lots of different characters. How important is that to you?
GONG YOO, ACTOR (VIA INTERPRETER)
I’m someone who likes creativity.16 When I first started, the projects I chose were for my own satisfaction,17 my own sense of achievement. I didn’t know Goblin or Train to Busan would receive so much attention from the world. I feel proud in that sort of aspect.18
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
You mention the blockbuster film Train to Busan. How important was it to receive international acclaim19 for that movie?
GONG YOO, ACTOR (VIA INTERPRETER)
The film Train to Busan is a zombie20 movie that Hollywood likes, but it’s not something that Korean audiences are used to. The standards of the audience were much higher, so I never thought it would work in the international market. That mindset21 changed after I was invited to Cannes, after the film opened in various countries outside of Asia [and] after it came first in the box office. More importantly, rather than me gaining international recognition,22 I’m proud that these creative projects from Korea are getting recognized and being loved. It makes me want to do more. Hollywood is amazing. France is amazing. But I’m a Korean actor after all.
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
You are famous, but reluctantly23 so. You don’t like all the fame and everything that goes with it. You prefer to be a private person and do your art, do your craft.24
GONG YOO, ACTOR
I think it’s [that’s] true.
GONG YOO, ACTOR (VIA INTERPRETER)
As an actor, you have to face the public all the time. It’s a job that gives people fantasies25 but also creates prejudices.26 These prejudices are the scariest things. People judge your personal life, or your image, and it can affect the characters I [you] play. Therefore, I try not to showcase27 my personal life too much. In some ways, I think I may not have the best personality28 to be an actor. It doesn’t matter much when I’m in front of the cameras, but when they go off, I feel embarrassed to expose29 my private life. I like being natural, but I’m worried there may be misunderstandings,30 so that’s why I tend to come off a little shy.
ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT
You said in the past that you don’t know how long you will stay an actor, and I think you’d have a lot of heartbroken31 fans. But if you weren’t acting, what else would you like to do?
GONG YOO, ACTOR (VIA INTERPRETER)
I think I find planning a film quite interesting. I think it would be fun to individually,32 or more professionally,33 plan out a film without being an actor. In Hollywood, where they have massive capital,34 actors get to produce a lot, so I envy that. Normally, a movie tells a message the director wants to tell, not what the actors wants [want] to tell. So, I think it would be great to produce a project that can get my own message out with my favorite director and my favorite actor.

我不知道為什麼。我不知道。

你大可歸功於自己的演技。但有某種東西跟觀眾一拍即合，不是嗎？所有女性都愛上了你飾演的角色。

對啊，是角色，不是我。

我本來非常擔心這部作品。我真的沒想到它會在亞洲和世界各地這麼受歡迎。當我思考這部電視劇為什麼這麼受喜愛──至少在韓國……這是一個超越人與人之間關係和愛情的故事。這個像神一樣的特殊人物擁有遠大於凡人的能耐，他和與他相比微不足道的人類互動，以及人類和非人類之間的愛情。我想觀眾覺得這題材很新鮮。比方說它跟電影《暮光之城》有點像，那部片在講一個吸血鬼愛上柔弱的人類女孩。

你非常全方位，演過各種不同角色。這對你來說有何重要性？

我是個熱愛創造力的人。剛出道時，我選擇的案子都是為了滿足自己、滿足自己的成就感。我沒料到《孤單又燦爛的神──鬼怪》或《屍速列車》會獲得世界各地這麼多的關注。從那方面來看，我感到很驕傲。

你提到賣座片《屍速列車》。此片贏得國際好評有何重要意義？

《屍速列車》這部電影是好萊塢喜愛的殭屍片，但這並非韓國觀眾過去習慣的。觀眾的標準大為提高了，所以我沒想過它能成功進軍國際市場。但這個想法在我受邀至坎城之後改變了，這部電影在亞洲之外的許多國家上映，拿下票房冠軍。更重要的是，讓我感到驕傲的不是我個人獲得國際肯定，而是這些來自韓國的創意題材獲得認可及喜愛。這讓我想做更多。好萊塢很棒、法國也很棒。但我畢竟是一位韓國演員。

你很紅，不過你不太想這樣。你不喜歡名氣以及伴隨而來的一切。你寧願當個不受侵擾的人，從事自己的藝術工作。

身為一個演員，你必須無時無刻面對大眾。這份工作讓人心懷幻想，卻也帶來成見。這些偏見是最可怕的東西。人們會因為某人的私生活或形象加以評斷，這甚至會影響你所扮演的角色。因此，我試著盡量不要過度展現我的私生活。在某些方面來說，我想我的個性不太適合當個演員。這並不至於影響我在鏡頭前的表現，但在鏡頭之外，我會因為私生活被攤在陽光下而覺得不自在。我喜歡表現自然的一面，但我也擔心會引來誤解，這就是我為什麼常顯得靦腆。

你過去曾表示不知道演員生涯會持續多久，我想屆時你會有非常多心碎的粉絲。但是如果你不演戲，你會想做什麼？

我想我覺得電影企劃蠻有趣的。我想如果不當演員，以自己的方式或更專業的方式企劃一部電影會很好玩。在好萊塢，他們的資本雄厚，演員們得以產出大量作品，這點我很羨慕。一般來說，電影傳達的是導演想傳達的訊息，而不是演員想傳達的。所以如果能與我喜歡的導演和演員合作，製作出一部能傳達我的訊息的作品，那會很棒。
