Naomi Osaka: Hard-Hitting and Humble

Since defeating tennis legend Serena Williams and becoming the number one female tennis player in the world, Naomi Osaka has been the talk of the town. The 21-year-old has gained people’s attention for not only her talent but also her shy, modest personality and unique cultural background.
Osaka plays for Japan but had a multicultural upbringing. Born to a Haitian father and Japanese mother, Osaka moved from Japan to the United States at three years old. Her first language is English, but she also grew up speaking Creole with her grandparents and Japanese with her mother. For Osaka, it’s impossible to pick which culture she identifies with because all three are a part of her. “I don’t really know what feeling Japanese or Haitian or American is supposed to feel like,” she says. “I just feel like me.”
Osaka’s journey to tennis stardom began as a child, thanks to her father. Inspired by how Serena and Venus Williams’s father trained his daughters, Osaka’s father decided to teach his two daughters to play tennis as well. Under their father’s guidance, the girls began hitting anywhere from hundreds to thousands of balls daily. For Naomi, beating her older sister was all the motivation she needed to succeed.
自從擊敗網球傳奇賽雷娜．威廉斯（又稱「小威廉斯」）並成為世界排名第一的球后，大坂直美一直是眾人談論的焦點。這位二十一歲的女將獲得眾人關注不只是因為她的才華，更是因為她害羞、謙虛的個性和獨特的文化背景。
大坂直美代表日本出賽，卻擁有多元文化的成長過程。她由海地裔父親和日籍母親所生，三歲時從日本搬到美國。她的第一語言是英文，但成長過程中她也和祖父母以克里奧爾語交談，並和母親講日語。對大坂直美來說，要挑哪一個才是她認同的文化是不可能的，因為這三個都是她的一部分。她說：「我不是很清楚日本人或海地人或美國人應該要有什麼感覺。我只覺得像我自己。」
多虧了父親，大坂直美從小就開始邁向網球明星之路。她父親受到大小威廉斯的父親訓練女兒的方式所啟發，也決定要教自己的兩個女兒打網球。在父親的指導下，女孩們開始每天打球，從幾百顆到幾千顆球不等。對大坂直美而言，擊敗姊姊是她需要成功的唯一動機。

At just 14 years old, Naomi started playing tennis professionally. With her powerful plays, she began climbing the ranks. The biggest milestone in Osaka’s career so far came in 2018, when she beat her childhood idol, tennis legend Serena Williams, to win the US Open. She won her second Grand Slam title in January of this year at the Australian Open and became the first Asian player to ever be ranked as number one in the world. According to her former coach, Sascha Bajin, when Osaka hits balls, “they go like freaking rockets.”
While Osaka’s playing style is aggressive, her personality is far from it. She’s earned a reputation for being unpretentious and sometimes awkward. In her speech after winning the Australian Open, she showed how humble she is by commending the other player and then thanking everyone who made the game possible, from her team and the spectators down to the ball kids. Osaka is also known for politely bowing to crowds, officials, and other players.
Osaka’s talent, humility, and multicultural background have made her an inspiration for people around the world. With the Summer Olympics set to take place in Tokyo next year, we’ll be seeing a lot more of this rising tennis star in the near future.
年僅十四歲時，大坂直美就開始打職業網球。她的球風強而有力，排名因此開始上升。到目前為止，她生涯最大的里程碑出現在二○一八年，那時她擊敗兒時偶像、網壇傳奇賽雷娜．威廉斯，贏得美國網球公開賽。今年一月她在澳洲網球公開賽贏得第二個大滿貫錦標賽冠軍，成為第一位排名世界第一的亞洲選手。據她以前的教練薩沙．巴因的說法，大坂直美擊球時「球根本就像火箭一樣」。
儘管大坂直美的球風很有侵略性，但她的性格卻完全不是如此。她因為不做作、有時還會彆扭而出名。她在贏得澳洲網球公開賽後的致詞中讚揚對手，並感謝讓這場比賽成為可能的所有人，從她的團隊、觀眾到球僮，這些都展現出她的謙虛。她也因禮貌地向群眾、主辦單位和其他選手鞠躬而為人所知。
大坂直美的才華、謙虛和多元文化背景使她鼓舞了世界各地的人。明年夏季奧林匹克運動會將在東京舉行，在不久的將來我們還會看到這位網壇明日之星更多的表現。
